Why it Helps to Take a Polish Holiday
f you have read our article about what makes up a fingernail you will know that there are similarities between your nails and your skin. So just as in the same way that you take great care of your skin, it is a good idea to take some extra care with your finger and toenails.
As much as I would like to be able to say that nail polish is wonderful stuff and is very good for your nails, I can't. There are chemicals in nail polish that are not good for your nails. This does not mean that you should never use nail polish, but it is a good idea to give your nails a break from polish from time to time.
There are no set rules for how often this should be or for how long a break should take. How often and how long a break you take is up to you to decide. If your nails are showing signs of fatigue then it is probably a good time to consider taking a polish holiday.
Chemicals in Nail Polish
Nail polish contains some chemicals that are similar to glue. That makes sense if you think about it, because the stronger the bond between your nails and your nail polish the less chance you have of your nail polish chipping.
How Polish Can Dry Out Your Nails
The downside of this is the chemicals dry out your nails. In most cases this is not a major issue, but drying out your nails on a constant basis eventually starts to reduce the health of your nails. The biggest problem this can cause is that when your nails become dry they also become brittle. Brittle nails break far more easily than those that are hydrated and therefore more flexible. Dry nails also tend to grow slowly.
In the same way that your skin breathes, your nails breathe too. Having a period without polish gives air the chance to get to your nails.
Extra Nail Hydration
To make the most of any polish holiday it can be a good idea to look round for products that help to hydrate your nail. This is something that is very difficult to do when polish is being used. As well as more specific products for nails you can consider using oils such as Argan oil. Argan oil is considered to be good for your hair and your skin and it can have a similar impact on nails. All you need is a drop or two to be rubbed into your nails and cuticle area. This can also help to stimulate nail grow.
If you don't want to spend out on specific oils and products you can also use whatever moisturiser you use to take care of your hands. If you choose to do this make sure you spend a little extra time massaging the moisturiser into your nails and cuticles.
Take Care of Your Cuticles Too
By the way, it is not just your nails that can dry out. Your cuticles can dry out too. So make sure to include your cuticles in any moisturising regime. As it is the area under your cuticles that new nail growth comes from, it is a good idea to pay attention to that area to make sure it is as healthy as it can possibly be.
If you decide to use a moisturiser on your nails it is a good idea to apply it when your nails are not dry, for example when you get out the shower. The moisturiser works by locking in the moisture to your nails.
